The great AI-powered search shift

In April 2025, OpenAI’s ChatGPT became the fifth most visited website in the world, surpassing the 5.14 billion visit mark. Just a few months earlier, it stood at 14th place; its meteoric 182% year-over-year traffic growth is proof that the hunger for conversational, real-time answers is only intensifying. It stands as the only major platform to accelerate growth month by month, even as legacy sites like Google, Wikipedia, Reddit, and Yahoo experience a gradual ebb. While Google still processes a staggering 14 billion searches each day, ChatGPT’s large language model (LLM) daily prompts have soared to 2.5 billion, doubling in just eight months. The momentum is undeniable - according to Similarweb, traditional search engines have plateaued as a category, posting a 2% year-over-year decline.
This explosive upward trend is fueled by ChatGPT’s capacity to deliver fresh, dynamic personalized search responses. Users are no longer content with static, keyword-based results; they are actively seeking the up-to-date immediacy of AI search systems.
To stay competitive in the AI race, in December 2023 Google launched Gemini, rapidly transforming its core search experience with AI at the center.
Gemini currently holds around 6% of traffic share among generative AI tools, but the more transformative move is the rollout of AI Overviews (AIO) powered by Gemini 2.5. These AI-generated summaries now appear at the top of search results, often above all traditional links, and are especially dominant for informational queries. A study by Ahrefs found that 99.2% of keywords triggering AI Overviews are informational in nature.
Initially introduced as an experiment, AI Overviews have quickly become a central part of the relevant search experience and user interactions. As of July 2025, they reach 2 billion monthly users, up from 1.5 billion just two months earlier. That’s nearly a quarter of the global population seeing AI-generated summaries in their search results.
But Google isn’t stopping there. Fresh-out-of-the-oven AI Mode, is a conversational search technology that blends Gemini 2.5’s advanced capabilities with Google’s vast information ecosystem. With over 100 million monthly active users in the US and India, AI Mode is designed to make the search experience more intuitive, personalized and efficient.
Google is not just defending its dominance; its redefining what search looks like in an AI-first world and building a zero-click ecosystem.
Zero-click searches are reshaping user preferences as well as how they interact with search engine outputs.
These are searches where users get the answer directly on the results page, without clicking through to any website. Google search has long supported this behavior with SERP features like featured snippets, answer boxes, and knowledge panels. Since the introduction of AI Overviews, Google has seen a 9% increase in visits. But (and this is a big but) those visits are shorter, which indicates that users are getting relevant results instantly and leaving without further engagement. This has led to a paradox: brands are seeing more impressions, but fewer clicks.
Even top-ranking content is losing clicks. For example, MailOnline’s SEO director revealed that when AI Overviews appear, the site loses over half its clicks even when it ranks first.
This shift is driven by the rise of AI-powered search engines like ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews, which now dominate the top of search queries with instant answers. Users are visiting Google more often but staying for less time. According to BrightEdge, impressions are up 49% year-over-year, but click-through rates have dropped 30%.
For Sitecore customers and content marketers, this means visibility is no longer just about ranking - it’s about being discoverable across AI agents and AI models, chatbots, and third-party channels that shape modern search.
AI-generated summaries are increasingly satisfying user intent without requiring a click. For marketers and content creators, this means fine-tuning strategies to ensure search relevance and visibility within these new formats - optimizing for featured content, structured data, and AI-friendly summaries that surface in zero-click search platforms.
Align your content with the questions your audience is asking. By directly addressing “how,” “what,” and “why” queries, you become the go-to source for knowledge, delivering exceptional value with every search.
Repurpose content for social media, newsletters, and partnerships with influencers. Building your presence beyond traditional search means your expertise resonates wherever your audience seeks information.
Track which content appears in AI Overviews and use analytics to inform your strategy. Tools like BrightEdge and Similarweb empower you to turn data into opportunity, continually refining your approach for maximum impact.
AI-driven discovery is not a challenge to overcome but a spark for innovation, enabling brands and creators to deliver meaningful, immediate value. By embracing these strategies, you’ll ensure your content isn’t just found; it’s trusted, shared, and remembered.
Those who embrace this shift will find themselves at the forefront of a new search experience where relevance, engagement, and storytelling become the keys to connection.
The strategic imperative is clear: embrace the story-driven, answer-first AI revolution, and position your message where tomorrow’s audience is searching for meaning, not just information. The time to adapt is now, and for those who lead this charge, the rewards will be as transformative as the shift itself.
