Struggling to choose the right CMS from a sea of seemingly perfect options?

With so many platforms making similar promises, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But not all CMS solutions are created equal.

According to analysts, customers are increasingly looking for a content management system that is user-friendly, customizable, and has the flexibility to integrate with other software systems. There is also a growing demand for cloud-based CMS solutions, with companies seeking to reduce their IT infrastructure costs.

We're here to help you separate storytelling from substance, by comparing Sitecore and Optimizely across key features, pricing and costs, customer support, and real user experiences. Drawing on trusted review sites and firsthand customer insights, we’ll also explore why many organizations ultimately choose Sitecore.

Sitecore vs. Optimizely: An overview

To get started, let’s look at a brief overview of both companies:

  • Sitecore: Sitecore is a global leader in digital experience software, trusted by visionary brands like L’Oréal, Microsoft, and United Airlines to power their content lifecycle from content strategy to digital experience delivery. Our composable platform gives marketers and technologists the power to build together at global scale – harnessing content, data, personalization, and AI – to manage digital assets, create engaging content, understand customer intent, and deliver standout experiences across all touchpoints.

  • Optimizely: Optimizely is on a mission to make the lives of marketers better with Optimizely One, the world’s first operating system for marketing teams. Optimizely One combines industry-leading solutions across content management, content marketing, experimentation, commerce and personalization, powering every stage of the marketing lifecycle through a single, AI-accelerated workflow. With the flexibility of a fully composable platform, Optimizely is proudly helping global brands like H&M, Salesforce, Zoom, and Toyota create content with speed, launch experiments with confidence, and deliver experiences of the highest quality.

The key differences between Sitecore and Optimizely

Both descriptions show similarities, like being composable solutions, large customer names, and a mission around enabling brands to deliver standout experiences. The differences are already starting to get blurred. So, let’s unpack the main differences before diving in further.

  • Digital Experience: Composability means you can buy what you need when you need it. Simple. Except, that means you need to integrate those solutions with Optimizely. Sitecore is years ahead of Optimizely here because they simply make the same acquisitions we do, just a few years later and then follow our lead, but are integrating slowly. This is true for their SaaS CMS too, which is 3 years behind Sitecore’s in its launch to market, which is important to note.

  • Customer base: Both companies tout great customer logos. But when you’re in the market for a CMS, you probably want to understand which brands trust each vendor with their website, not their secondary product lines. This is where Optimizely gets a bit tricky. The logos they like to show generally represent their experimentation business, not their CMS business, which usually tailors to smaller organizations. Sitecore’s logos are proudly CMS customers. Many of these customers use our proven SaaS CMS, while Optimizely's first live SaaS customer — a small partner—was only announced in February 2025.

A feature comparison of Sitecore vs. Optimizely

Sitecore offers a proven SaaS CMS or a PaaS CMS, whereas Optimizely only launched their SaaS CMS in July 2024 and are still struggling to build its customer base.

7 reasons to choose Sitecore over Optimizely

Here are the top 7 reasons why Sitecore is the superior choice over Optimizely:

Sitecore Optimizely
Who it's for Marketers, content creators, and developers Marketers
Content authoring Sitecore CMS offers a mature and market-tested WYSIWYG editor offering seamless content authoring capabilities for marketers. A visual builder that needs to be configured making marketers dependent on technical teams for set up.1
Personalization SitecoreAI’s unified composed platform that offers personalization and testing without complications.   Incurs additional purchases of Optimizely Experimentation that is expensive.2
Analytics Mature and market-tested site and page performance analytics in the CMS with the flexibility to integrate with customers’ tech stack and a marketplace that allows feature extensibility.   Dependent on additional Optimizely products or third-party integrations.3
AI and GenAI Built-in AI capabilities with CMS and Agentic Studio with pre-built agents catered to marketer’s workflow and ability to build multitasking workflows by connecting agents.   Optimizely Opal capabilities are provided across products but more AI features within their CMP4, leaving want for AI capabilities in their CMS.
Integrations A unified, composed platform with SitecoreAI that brings together content, assets, data and AI along with customer-preferred third-party solutions, offering over 1000 out-of-the-box connectors and marketplace to build custom applications.   While Optimizely tells a great story with Optimizely One, they lack simple integrations between their products. Optimizely is still trying to perfect the integration between their CMS and CMP or their CMS and Experimentation5.
Partner and Community Ecosystem Sitecore has a strong partner network who are experienced with Sitecore’s CMS and other solutions, offering experience and value to the CMS projects' implementation and ongoing success. Optimizely has a partner network6 who are experienced in their experimentation and commerce solutions, with very few having experience with their CMS and almost none having multiple Optimizely product certifications or experience with enterprise needs, meaning you’ll need to find different partners for each solution, and most won’t have the expertise your enterprise trusts.

The pros and cons of Sitecore and Optimizely

Optimizely pros:

  • Strong but expensive experimentation products that is an added cost with CMS
  • Marketplace which includes paid add-ons
  • Optimizely Opal provides standard AI capabilities but more so in their CMP than CMS7

Optimizely cons:

  • Poor integration between solutions
  • Smaller partner community
  • Lacks the depth and flexibility developers need in a modern CMS8

Sitecore pros:

  • Depth of features and functionalities with SaaS maturity in the market
  • AI-powered site search and product discovery
  • Strong integration ecosystem
  • Enterprise-grade security and governance

Sitecore cons:

  • A bit on the pricier side with good value for cost

Real experiences and reviews: What Optimizely customers have to say

“Some of the features we are starting to explore need additional development, which can delay deliveries.” [Source – G2]

“Integration between CMP and CMS is very basic and limited. This needs to be improved to fully benefit from the workflow. Not being able to flex the user base for the CMP product. Incredibly limiting. Opti Graph implementation has been disappointing, not delivering the AI functionality we were expecting” [Source – Gartner Peer Reviews]

“It's steep learning curve, especially for new users or smaller teams without dedicated developers.” [Source – G2]
