Data Privacy Day

Data Privacy Day is celebrated every year on January 28 — and has been expanded this year to a whole week (Jan. 24-28) The themes of this celebration are to Respect Privacy, Safeguard Data, and Enable Trust, as part of a global effort to create an awareness of the importance of privacy and personal data protection. The goal is to educate and promote the regulations, technologies, and actors that contribute to data privacy worldwide.

This January, at the start of a new year, Sitecore is embracing this celebration by using this as an opportunity to kick off our new year goals within our Privacy Team.

Why has data privacy become so important?

In the last two years, we have seen countries such as China, Brazil, and the UAE create their own privacy regulations. In the USA, the Colorado Privacy Act became the third comprehensive data privacy regulation, after California with the CCPA and CPRA, and Virginia with the CDPA.

But it’s not just the regulatory landscape that is changing. With daily data breaches and regulations shifting the environment, the trust climate in which we operate is constantly evolving. With that in mind, some customers may be more reticent to share any data if there is even a slight perception that an organization cannot support compliance obligations.

It’s likely no surprise then that recent surveys show that 90% of consumers are concerned about their online privacy. Neither is it a surprise that privacy and cybersecurity are often selected as two of the three most important issue areas for businesses.

What does this mean to our customers?

Because of that, being able to maintain the trust of those whose data is collected, and safeguarded, is critical to conducting business in today’s global digital economy. We know that building trust is not a one-and-done effort — and that it goes beyond having policies on a website.

Our goal is to create digital solutions that keep our customers' information safe and protected — which includes providing UX functionality for increased options and configuration choices for how data is collected, used, and deleted. By adopting more holistic approaches to consumer data strategy, privacy, and data protection, companies have an opportunity to move quickly, be safe, and build trust with confidence.
