ENMAX provides electricity services, products, and solutions across Alberta in Canada, as well as in Maine in the US through its Versant Power business. As a business in a highly regulated industry, the company must balance compliance with the need to provide customers with easy, intuitive access to their account information. Today’s customers expect fast, personalized digital experiences, and ENMAX is committed to delivering exceptional service this way.

The company’s previous SharePoint-based website and customer platform, My Account, were fragmented, hard to manage, and lacked the scalability needed to evolve. “By moving beyond our legacy web technology, we’ve unlocked the ability to deliver the seamless digital experiences our customers expect,” said Michelle Freer, Digital Experience Manager at ENMAX. “Breaking down internal silos has also strengthened visibility and collaboration across projects, empowering our teams to innovate more effectively together.” ENMAX’s leadership quickly recognized that this challenge could not be solved purely through a website redesign. To move forward, the organization needed a new foundation for creating, managing, and evolving digital experiences at scale.

Building strategic foundations on Sitecore

ENMAX rebuilt its website with Sitecore’s composable platform, creating a scalable, component-driven system that speeds content production and powers better search and personalization.

ENMAX chose Sitecore for its ability to go beyond traditional content management. Sitecore offers a powerful, composable DXP designed to meet the organization’s complex requirements across a highly regulated, multi-business unit landscape. “Sitecore provided the scalable foundation that we needed to centralize both public and secure digital experiences, support multiple business units on a single unified platform, and deliver personalized content at scale,” said Freer.

Its flexibility and modular architecture enabled seamless integration across systems, ensuring the agility and governance essential to ENMAX’s operations. The adoption of Sitecore’s full stack was critical in modernizing the customer experience, supporting a data-driven strategy, and improving enterprise-wide efficiency.

The initiative went beyond a platform upgrade. It was a complete shift in how ENMAX’s digital teams operate. “The Sitecore deployment became a catalyst for transformation, leading to the creation of a new internal digital agency: the Digital Experience Team (DEX),” explains Freer. “This cross-functional group brings together teams across the business to collaborate in a more agile and strategic way, underpinned by enterprise-wide governance.”

AI now handles tedious tasks like tagging and metadata, improving content structure and discoverability. Looking ahead, ENMAX plans to give teams more self-service flexibility while keeping governance in place through Sitecore templates.

Bringing a modern digital experience platform to life

Sitecore implementation partner Fishtank Consulting supported ENMAX’s Sitecore development, which included restructuring site navigation, recreating dozens of forms, and redesigning every page. They focused on building a sustainable, scalable platform that ENMAX could confidently evolve over time.

A key part of their delivery model was close collaboration, with Fishtank Consulting’s development experts embedded alongside ENMAX’s internal team to share knowledge and enable an efficient handover, streamlined support, and long-term autonomy. "Fishtank Consulting’s technical leadership and Sitecore expertise were instrumental in delivering a robust, future-ready platform that supports our entire digital ecosystem," states Freer.

They partnered on the solution deployment and integrations for ENMAX’s public website and My Account platform. The solutions were deployed using tools designed to support agile project management and team collaboration.

The new digital ecosystem includes integrations with Vercel for front-end hosting, Google Analytics for real-time user insights, and Power BI for enterprise-level reporting and dashboards. ENMAX’s digital platform also integrates securely with critical back-office systems for essential functions such as customer relationship management and access/identity management.
